A question about refunds?

ok so ive noticed that when u get a refund for something the store always returns the money in the form of payment so if u paid with a credit card they will put the money back on it like u never bought anything. so i bought something with a check and now i want to return it so how ill they pay me back???? like are they going to write me a check or will i just get cash????????????
