Speakers ON my computer?

i have a laptop, and it has built in speakers. they are not functioning for anything, and on itunes i cannot play music. what would cause this? all the software was deleted off the computer and added back. and the speakers fail to work. checked all sound control and under the control panel it says there are no speakers installed? help.
