When traveling to another country like Brazil, do I have to exchange my cash or use debit card?

I don't know much about how or where you do a currency exchange...because they don't use American Money there....I do have a visa debit card setup checking account from Bank of America...I'd hope that would actually work in other countries but still I might need some cash in some places too where would I exchange U.S. cash for the money they use?
