Will a check automatically be taken out of my account?

If I write a check at a super market, will it automatically take away from my account balance, or will my account balance stay the same until the check clears? How long does it take a check to clear? I'm used to using a debit card and am not too familiar with checks. Sure I sound like a moron, but I need to know...
