A friend of mine gave me a dog for my birthday how do i get rid of it?

he got it from a breeder and his landlord said he couldnt keep her so he gave it to me as a birthday present. the thing is i hate dogs. so can i give it back to the breeder and get some cash instead, can i sell it, or am i better off just giving it away to someone. since my friend lives 500 miles away from me i doubt getting rid of her will be noticed by him so im not worried about looking un-grateful for the present.
